“HAMWORTHY, a parish in the hundred of Cogdean, Last Shaston division of county Dorset, 7½ miles N.E. of Wareham, and 1½ mile W. of Poole, within which borough it is included. It is a small village, adjoining the Poole station, and is situated on a peninsula in Poole harbour. Charles X., after having been compelled to abdicate the throne of France, landed here on his route to Lulworth Castle. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Sarum, value £62, in the patronage of Eton College. The old church was destroyed during the civil war of Charles I. The present one, erected in 1826, is a neat structure, with a tower containing one bell. The Independents have a place of worship. There is a National school. Sir Ivor Bertie Guest is lord of the manor."
