WOODBURY, a parish (formerly a market-town) in the eastern division of the hundred of BUDLEIGH, county of DEVON, 3 miles (E. by S.) from Topsham, containing 1494 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the Custos and College of Vicars Choral in the Cathedral Church of Exeter, endowed with £800 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter. The church is dedicated to St. Swithin. The navigable river Exe bounds the parish on the west. A charity school is supported by the several endowments of Thomas Weare, in 1691; William Holwell, M.D., in 1707; and Esaias Broadmead, in 1728; amounting in the whole to £50 per annum.
