Licensed Victuallers 1750-1775

The following are transcriptions of the approval of Licensed Victuallers (Publicans), recorded under Quarter Sessions.

These are for the ‘North Shebbear and Hartland Division’, but are sometimes said to be the ‘Bideford Sessions’, even though Bideford was not included in this area.

The name of the person requesting a License is recorded, together with the person who agreed to stand as Surety for their keeping an orderly house.

The documents are housed in Devon Record Office (see reference number against each year).  Surviving documents start from 1728.  This batch covers 1750 to 1775.  (N.B: Pub names do not start appearing against licensees names unto c.1822).

Devon - Shebbear Division.

Be it remembered this 25th day of September 1750 the severall victuallers hereunder named and the severall suretys for them did acknowledge to owe to our Soveraigne Lord King George the Second the severall sumes wrote against each of their names respectively [ten pounds] acknowledge to owe to our Soveraigne Lord King George the Second the severall sumes wrote against each of their names respectively before us whose hands are hereunto sett two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace of and for the said county, to be levyed, etc.

Upon condition that if such severall Victuallers do keep good order in their several houses yards and backsides pursuant to the licences now granted to them for the year now next ensuing or until the next General Day for granting Licences for this Division then such recognizances respectively to be voyd or else to be in full force.

1751

Devon - Shebbear Division.

Be it remembered this 12th day of September 1751 the severall victuallers hereunder named did acknowledge before us whose hands and seals are hereunto sett two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace of and for the county aforesaid to owe our Sovereigne Lord King George the Second the sume of ten pounds and their severall suretys respectively the sume of five pounds each to be levied etc.

Upon this condition that if the said severall Victuallers do keep good order in their several houses yards and backsides pursuant to their severall licences were severally granted to them until the next General Day for granting Licences for this Division then such recognizances to be voyd or else to remain and be in force.

Taken before us the day and year above: Thomas SALTREN, Arscott BICKFORD.

Devon - North Shebbear Division.

Be it remembered that on this 13th day of October 1752 the severall victuallers hereunder named did acknowledge to owe (before us whose names are subscribed two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace of and for the said county) to our Sovereigne Lord King George the Second the sume of ten pounds each and their severall suretys for them the sume of five pounds to be levyed, etc.

Upon this condition that if the said severall Victuallers do keep good order in their several houses yards and backsides pursuant to their severall licences to them granted for one whole year or until the next General Day for granting licences for this Division then such recognizances to be voyd respectively or else to remain and be in force.

Be it remembered that on this 1st day of September 1753 the severall persons victuallers hereunder named did acknowledge (before us whose names are hereunto sett two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace of and for the said county upon granting licences severally to them) to owe to our Sovereigne Lord King George the Second his heirs and successors the sume of ten pounds each and their severall suretys for them respectively the severall sumes satt against their names as respectively to be levyed on their severall and respective goods & chattles Lands and Tenements to his said Majesty's use.

Upon this condition that if the said severall Victuallers respectively do maintain & keep good order and rule within their several and respective houses yards and backsides for one year to commence on the twenty ninth day of this instant September pursuant to the laws and statutes of this Realme then such recognizances respectively to be voyd or else to remain and be in force respectively.

Taken and acknowledged the day and year above, before us: Bouchier WREY, J CLEVLAND.

Hartland Division in Devon.

Be it remembered that on this 4th day of September 1754 the severall victuallers hereunder named did acknowledge before us whose names are hereunto subscribed three of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the said county of Devon to owe our Soveraigne Lord King George the Second his heirs and successors the sume of ten pounds each and the severall suretys for them the severall sums set against their names respectively to be levied on their several and respective goods and chattles lands and tenements, etc.

Upon this condition that if the said severall Victuallers do severally & respectively maintain good order and rule within their several houses yards and backsides respectively for one year to commence on the 29th day of this instant September pursuant to the laws and statures of this realm then such recognisances respectively to be void or else to remain in force.

Taken and acknowledged at Bideford in the said county the day and year first above written: Arscott BICKFORD, J CLEVLAND, John HARRIS.

Be it remembered this 11th day of September 1755 the severall persons victuallers hereunder named did acknowledge before us whose names are hereunto sett two of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace of and for the said County to owe our Soveraigne Lord King George the Second his heirs & successors the sume of ten pounds each and the severall suretys for them the severall sums set against their names respectively to be levied on their severall and respective goods & chattles lands and tenements to his said Majesty's use.

Upon condition that if the said severall Victuallers respectively do maintain and keep good order & rule within their several and respective houses yards and backsides for which they are now lycensed for one year to commence on the 29th day of this instant pursuant to the laws and statutes of this realm, then such recognizances respectively to be void or else to remain and be in full force respectively.

Taken and acknowledged at Buckland Brewer the 11th day of September 1755, before Arscott BICKFORD, George ROOKE.

Be it remembered the 6th day of September in the year 1756 the severall victuallers hereunder named residing in the severall parishes as under mentioned did acknowledge before us his Majesty's Justices of the Peace of the county aforesaid whose hands are subscribed to owe to our Soveraigne Lord King George the Second the sume of ten pounds a peice and the severall suretys for them in five pounds a peice (and in case of the absence of the victualler in ten pounds a peice) to be levied on their severall goods & chattles lands & tenements.

Upon condition that if the severall Victuallers do keep good rule & order in their several houses yards and backsides as the law directs & pursuant to the licences to them now granted then their recognizances to be void otherwise to remain in full force.

These recognizances were taken at Bideford in County of Devon the 6th day September 1756, before us: Thomas BRUTON, George ROOKE.

1757

Devon to wit.

Be it remembered that on the 1st day of September 1757 the severall & respective victuallers & their sureties hereunder named came before us Arscott Bickford, George Rooke and Thomas Bruton esquires three of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the said county residing within the hundred of Shebbear in the said county & now acting for the North Division thereof & also for the hundred of Hartland in the said county And each of the said victuallers did acknowledge themselves to owe to our Soveraigne Lord King George the Second the sum of ten pounds a peice & the severall suretys for them five pounds a peice (and in case of the absence of the victuallers then two sureties in the sum of ten pounds for each surety) to be levyed on their severall goods & chattles lands and tenements.

On condition that if the said severall Victuallers do keep good order in their houses yards and backsides pursuant to the licences to them now granted for one year in such manner as the law in that case directs Then their respective recognizances to be void otherwise to remain and be in force.

Taken at Bideford the said 1st day of September 1757 before us: Arscott BICKFORD, Thomas BRUTON, George ROOKE.

Devon to wit.

Be it remembered that on the 7th day of September in the thirty second year of the reign of our Soveraign Lord King George the second & so forth and in the year of our Lord 1758 the severall & respective victuallers undernamed living in the severall parishes undermentioned lying within the Hundreds of Hartland & Shebbear North division in the said county came before Arscott Bickford & Thomas Bruton esquires two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the said county when each of the said victuallers acknowledged to be bound in ten pounds & the suretys in five pounds each and in the absence of the victuallers two suretys in ten pounds each to be levied on their & each of their respective goods and chattles lands & tenements.

On condition that if the respective victuallers do keep good rule and order in their severall houses yards backsides & gardens pursuant to the licence to them now granted and until the next licensing day for the respective parishes in the said two hundreds then the recognizances to be void otherwise to remain in full force.

Taken and acknowledged at Buckland Brewer in the county aforesaid the day & year aforesaid, before us: Arscott BICKFORD, Thomas BRUTON.

Devon to wit.

Be it remembered that on the 5th day of September in the year of our Lord 1759 the several victuallers undernamed living in the parishes undermentioned lying within the Hundred of Hartland & Shebbear North in the said county did acknowledge before us his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the said county whose names are subscribed to owe to our lord the king the sum of ten pounds a peice and the several suretys for them five pounds a peice & in the absence of some of the victuallers the two suretys in ten pounds a peice to be levied on their several goods & chattles lands & tenements.

On condition that if the several victuallers do keep good order in their houses yards & backsides pursuant to the licenses to them now granted & as the law directs until the next general licensing day for the said hundred Then their several recognizances to be void otherwise to remain in full force.

Taken and acknowledged the day & year abovesaid before us: Thomas BRUTON, Arscott BICKFORD.

Devon to wit.

Be it remembered that on the 15th day of September in the year of our Lord 1760 the several victuallers & their suretys came before us his Majesty's Justices of the peace of the county aforesaid residing within the hundred of Shebbear in the said county and acting for the north division thereof & also for the hundred of Hartland in the said county And each of the victuallers did acknowledge to owe to our soveraign Lord King George the 2nd ten pounds a peice & the suretys for them five pounds a peice and in case of the absence of the victualler then two suretys in the sum of ten pounds for each surety. To be levied on their several goods and chattles lands and tenements.

On condition that if the several victuallers do keep good order in their houses yards & backsides pursuant to the licenses to them now granted for one year in such manner as the law in that case directs then their respective recognizances to be void otherwise to remain in full force.
