Licensed Victuallers 1728-1749

The following are transcriptions of the approval of Licensed Victuallers (Publicans), recorded under Quarter Sessions.
These are for the ‘North Shebbear and Hartland Division’, but are sometimes said to be the ‘Bideford Sessions’, even though Bideford was not included in this area.
The name of the person requesting a License is recorded, together with the person who agreed to stand as Surety for their keeping an orderly house.
The documents are housed in Devon Record Office (see reference number against each year).  Surviving documents start from 1728.  (N.B: Pub names do not start appearing against licensees names until c.1822).

Devon. Memorandum the 23rd day of May 1728.

The severall victuallers hereunder named do acknowledge before his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the said County whose names are hereunto sett to owe unto our Soveraigne Lord King George the Second severally the sume of tenn pounds a peece lawfull money of Great Britain and the severall sureties for them hereunder named do acknowledge to owe unto our Soveraigne Lord the King severally the sume of five pounds a peece of like lawfull money of Great Britain to be levyed on their severall & respective goods and chattles.

On this Condition that they the said severall Victuallers do keep good order in their severall houses yards and backsides pursuant to the severall licences to them severally granted bearing date the day and year above said for the remaining part of this year home to Easter next or the next Generall Day for granting of Licence for this Division Then these Recognizances to be voyd and of none effort otherwise to be stand and remain in full power force and virtue.

Devon. Memorandum the 2nd day of September 1730.

The severall victuallers hereunder named do acknowledge before his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the said County whose names are hereunto sett to owe to our Soveraigne Lord King George the Second severally the sume of tenn pounds a peece lawfull money of Great Britain. The severall victuallers hereunder named do acknowledge before his Majesty's Justices of the Pease of & for this said country to owe to our Soveraigne Lord King George the Second the sume of ten pounds a peece and the several suretys for them the sume of five pounds a peece to be levyed on their respective goods & chattels etc.

Upon this Condition that if the severall Victuallers do keep good order in their severall houses yards and backsides pursuant to their severall licences to them severally granted bearing date the day & year above untill the next generall day for licenceing for this Division then their severall recognizances to be voyd or else to remain & be in force.

On this Condition that if the said severall Victuallers do keep good order in their severall houses yards and backsides pursuant to their severall licences to them severally granted until the next generall day for granting of licences for this Division then their severall recognizances to be voyd or else to remain & be in force.

And the severall suretys for them severally the sume of five pounds a peice of like lawfull money to be levyed on their several and respective goods and chattles, etc.

On this Condition that if the said severall Victuallers do keep good order in their several houses yards & backsides pursuant to the severall licences to them severally granted bearing date the day & year abovesaid until the next general day for granting of Licence for this Division then these Recognizances to be voyd or else to remain in full force.

On this Condition that if the said severall Victuallers do keep good order in their severall houses yards and backsides pursuant to their severall licences to them now severally granted until the next general day for granting of licences for this Division then their severall Recognizances to be voyd or else to remain and be in force.

On this Condition that if the severall Victuallers do keep good order in their severall houses yards and backsides pursuant to their severall licences to them now severally granted until the next General Day for granting of Licences for this Division then the severall recognizances to be voyd or else to remain and be in force.

On this Condition that if such severall Victuallers respectively do keep good order pursuant to their licences to them this day granted until the next General Day for granting of Licences for this Division then the S. Recognizances to be voyd otherwise to be in force.

Be it remembered this 27th day of September 1744 the severall victuallers hereunder named did acknowledge to owe to our Sovereigne King George the Second before his Majesty's Justices of the Peace of and for the said county whose names subscribed the sum of ten pounds each and the severall suretys for them the sume of five pounds each to be levyed, etc.

Upon condition that if the said severall Victuallers do keep good order in their several houses yards and backsides pursuant to their severall licences now severally granted them until the next General Day for granting licences for this Division then these recognizances to be voyd or else to remain in force.
