Torbay and its Raised Beaches
By Arthur L.Hunt, M.A., F.L.S., F.G.S.
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. 45, (1913), pp. 377-393.
Index prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was presented at the Association’s 23rd July, 1913 Buckfastleigh meeting. There is great deal of professional literature on the raised beaches of Tor Bay since they occupy a critical position in the Quaternary stratigraphy of southwest Britain. Scientific debate on the topic has at times been contentious, strenuous, even robust, and this rather bad-tempered paper is an example. For the genealogist, however, it is a treasure trove of the geologists, cartographers, academics and “leading authorities”, all with an interest in the early geology of our county. Mr Hunt’s paper can be found in a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
