President’s Address
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. XVII, (1885), pp. 33-63.
by
R.F. Weymouth Esq., M.A., D. Litt.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Devonshire Association’s Presidential Address was presented at its July 1885 Seaton meeting. Dr. Weymouth in a highly enthusiastic, if rather unstructured manner, attempted to blend and intertwine his twin fascinations: Devon and Philology, with our county’s Dialect as the vehicle used to illustrate its connections to a wide range of other dialects and languages. The President, Dr. Richard Francis Weymouth, born near Plymouth, was a Baptist layman, schoolmaster and Bible student who was particularly well-known for producing one of the earliest modern language translations of the New Testament. After graduation from University College, London, he received the first Doctor of Literature degree from the University of London in 1868. His Presidential Address, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
