President’s Address - Early English Freeholders
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. XXVI (1894), pp. 25-40.
by
Sir Frederick Pollock, Bart., M.A.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Devonshire Association’s Presidential Address was delivered at its July 1894 South Molton meeting. The President’s aim was to explore and elucidate certain historical problems associated with use of the term 'village community.' These particularly related to land tenure during the Anglo-Norman (Domesday Book survey) period following the Conquest. The Association President for 1894, Sir Frederick Pollock, 3rd Baronet, PC, FBA (10 Dec. 1845 – 18 Jan. 1937) was a jurist best known for his ‘History of English Law before the Time of Edward I’, written with F.W. Maitland, and his lifelong correspondence with US Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. His biography together with portrait, is available in Wikipedia. Sir Frederick’s Presidential Address, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
