President’s Address
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. VIII, (1876), pp. 25-42.
by
Rev. Treasurer Hawker, M.A.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Devonshire Association’s Presidential Address was read at its July 1876 Ashburton meeting. Rev. Hawker’s aim was “to show how science, literature, and art affect socially the masses in the present day — always, we may boldly say, beneficially”. Rev. John Manley Hawker was Rector of St Peter’s Church, Berrynarbor, and as well, Treasurer and Prebendary of Exeter Cathedral. His attractive 1884 brass memorial plaque is in the church there. A picture of the memorial is available here. A fulsome obituary is available in GENUKI. The Address, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
