Address of the President.
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. XXXVIII (1907), pp. 44-55.
by
The Right Reverend The Lord Bishop of Exeter
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Devonshire Association’s Presidential Address was delivered at its 23rd July 1907 Axminster meeting. The Lord Bishop’s wide-ranging paper focused on the county of Devon in relation to its science, literature, and art, and was motivated by his desire to stimulate and enhance Association member’s feelings of patriotism towards their county. The President for 1907, Lord Rupert Ernest William Gascoyne-Cecil was Bishop of Exeter, 1916-1936. Second son of the Marquess of Salisbury he was educated at Eton and Oxford. Rev. Lord Cecil was rector of Hatfield, Hertfordshire, for 28 years before appointment as bishop. Married in 1887, with three daughters and four sons, three of whom as patriots, were killed in the First World War. He was generally liked but was reputedly an eccentric. His Presidential Address, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
