The Devonshire Association’s Presidential Address was presented at its July 1888 Exeter meeting. Dean Cowie’s address is a considered and optimistic retrospective on progress to date of the contemporary Sciences. The author, Benjamin Morgan Cowie was appointed Dean of Exeter Cathedral in 1883. The Dictionary of National Biography, 1901 Supplement, provides much detailed information about Dean Cowie’s life and his many remarkable contributions. He died in London on 3 May 1900. His extensive obituary is available in GENUKI. The Dean’s Presidential Address, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive.
