This popular periodical, of the type known as a 'pocket companion', was produced by a group styling themselves A Society of Gentlemen and published by H D Symonds (London) between 1797 and 1804. The later volumes were published in London by T Hurst. The section on Devonshire is an account in eulogistic terms of the author's visit to Sidmouth and Sidbury, then on to Torbay, where he writes at length on the landing in 1688 of William Prince of Orange. As entertainment he recounts the fabled introduction of Mr John Duke of Otterton, whose surname led him to be mistaken by the Prince as a senior member of the peerage. This rare book was produced from a digital copy held by the New York City Library that can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries.
