Manors in Devon, 1755
Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. 35 (1903), pp. 654-661.
by
J.B. Pearson
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper, presented at the Association's July 1903, Sidmouth meeting, is based on a MSS record of Dr Milles,' Dean of Exeter's 1754-5 survey of Devonshire's clergy, from a copy lodged with the Bodleian Library. The Dean sent every parochial clergyman in the county a list of 100 questions. Only about a quarter of those contacted responded. From this information, Rev Dr Pearson has extracted much interesting information on the number, size and work of Manors in the county at that time. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. The copy of this rare book is held at the University of Michigan Library and is available from the Internet Archive.
