James Heywood Markland 1788-1864 was the son of Robert Markland of Manchester. He attended school in Chester and worked as a solicitor in London after 1808. In 1821 he married Charlotte Freeling. His antiquarian activities led him to becoming an FSA in 1809 and to producing an 1818 edition of Chester Mysteries and an 1840 work on church memorials. He is described as a "strong and constant supporter of all church societies" He was one of seven people co-opted into the Roxburghe Club in 1812. The Roxburghe Club is the oldest and most distinguished society devoted to printing unpublished documents and reprinting rare printed texts, among them unknown or neglected works of English literature and history. This rare book was produced from a digital copy held by the University of Michigan Library that can be downloaded from Google Books. Those on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
