On the Submerged Forest at Westward Ho! Bideford Bay

by

Inkermann Rogers

Trans. Devon Assoc. 1908, Vol XL, pp. 249-259.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Paper was presented at the Association’s 28th July 1908 Newton Abbot meeting. Author, Mr Rogers reported that he had unearthed an oak tree trunk at Westward Ho! and concluded that Oak was the predominant species of tree that had formed the sunken forest. He also found evidence of many plant seeds. Their names are listed in his paper. He concluded that they provided evidence that the submerged forest must originally have been extensively populated by animals. Much of the paper focuses on problems related to coastal erosion. Mr. Rogers was a keen local historian and published numerous papers as well as privately printed pamphlets on Bideford and the surrounding district. He was made a Freeman of Bideford in 1947 and an Honorary Member of the Devonshire Association in 1948. His interesting biography is available here. The Paper, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
