Northam and Appledore Charity Account Book (1845-1846)

Description:

This Charity book was commenced in 1845, and divided into two sections.
Each person had a separate page.
Entries appear on pages 1 to 73 in surname order.
Pages 74 to 200 are blank.
Entries start again on page 201 to 335 in surname order.
Then a further set of blank pages.

New names were to be added on the blank pages at the back of each section.
Evidently the book was intended to last many years, but was only used in 1845 and 1846. Although the book does not show it, a comparison with the 1841 census shows that the first section was for Northam and the second section for Appledore.

Transcribers notes:

The table below has been sorted into surname, but page numbers and abode show where each person was living.
Occasionally we see the person was described as an ‘idiot’ – which generally meant that they were unable to manage their own affairs.

Occasionally ‘money’ was given, but most charitable donations were in the form of fabric so that clothes could be made.
A variety of fabrics are mentioned: Calico, canton, canvas, change, check, duck, fleming, flushing, fustian, lining, muslin, nankeen, pocketing, print, serge, shirting, stripal, etc.
Just over £88 worth of charity money was handed out in these two years.
