NORTH TAWTON AND NEIGHBOURHOOD
From Slater's Directory of ... Devon ... 1852
Transcribed by Caroline <tilburycm <AT> netscape.net>
NORTH TAWTON, a small market town, is situated in the hundred of the same name, distant 20 miles from Exeter, 7 from Oakhampton, and 12 from the railway station at Crediton. The church, dedicated to St. Mary [sic], is an ancient building; the living is a rectory, of which the Rev. Henry Hole is the present incumbent. There is likewise a chapel for Independents.
The market, which had been discontinued for some times, was revived a few years ago, and a convenient markethouse erected in 1849; it is held on Thursday, and is well attended. There is a large woollen manufactory adjacent to the town, affording employment to a number of hands; and at South Tawton, four miles distant are the most extensive lime quarries found in the county of Devon. The population, according to the late census of 1851, was 1,906.
POST OFFICE, William COLLIHILE, Post Master - Letters from London, Exeter, and all parts of England, arrive every morning at eight, and are despatched at five in the afternoon.
