Nicholas Monk, the King's Messenger and the Honest Clergyman
by
Frances B. Troup
Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 31, (1899) pp. 305-325.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The clergyman Nicholas Monck (Monk), sometime Rector of Plymtree, was younger brother of the celebrated General George Monck, the Duke of Albemarle, and son of Thomas Monk of Potheridge in Devon. The 'honest young clergyman' had a key role to play in the restoration of Charles II to the monarchy when he secretly visited his older brother to determine whether or not he would lend his support to this restoration effort. Both of the Monck brothers were later rewarded by Charles II. Nicholas Monck became the Bishop of Hereford and Provost of Eton shortly before his death in 1661. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
