This Paper was presented at the Association’s 23rd July 1914 Tavistock meeting. It is fourth in a series and a continuation of papers read by the late Mr. J. D. Prickman, two of which, entitled " Devonshire Wit and Humour' Parts I. and II., appeared in the Transactions, Vols. XXX. (1898) and XXXVII. (1905) respectively; the third in the series, "West-country Oddments”, was published in Vol. XLI. (1909).
The Paper’s author, Charles Hey Laycock, B.A., was born at Newton Abbot, educated at Newton College, then Merton College, Oxford. He joined the Devonshire Association in 1905 and became best-known as an expositor of the county dialect and folk-lore. He contributed papers to the Transactions on folk-music, wasps, as well as local wit and humour, and edited the Committee Reports on Verbal Provincialisms from 1929 and on Folklore from 1938, until his death.
