Sixth Report of the Committee on Devonshire Verbal Provincialisms
Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. XV, (1883), pp. 74-98.
by
F.T. Elworthy, Member of Council of the Philological Society
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Committee’s Report was read at the Association’s July 1883 Exmouth meeting. Its purpose was to note and record current and past use of any Verbal Provincialisms in Devonshire, in either written or spoken language, that were not included in the lists published in the Association’s Transactions. As in the previous year’s Report, the Chairman again expressed his regret that “among the large number of Association members, comparatively few appeared to feel sufficient interest in the county’s dialect to induce them to participate in preserving from oblivion the very many interesting and archaic forms of speech that still exist, and that nearly all must at some time or other have had an opportunity of hearing”. The Report from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitization of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
