The paper, read at the Association's 1888 Exeter meeting is an exploration of the origins of a celebrated article on North Devon dialect, apparently written by the Rev Joshua Hole, Vicar of South Molton (1695-1746), which appeared in the Gentleman's Magazine in 1746, although it had already appeared in 1727, and thenceforward in a number of editions up to 1839. It has been described variously as (a) one of the most important works on dialect in the English language, and (b) as of little literary merit, consisting mostly of strings of abuse in local dialect. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries.
