Morris Directory of Holcombe Rogus (1870)

Holcombe Rogus is a village and parish in Wellington union (Somerset), containing, by the census of 1861, 701 inhabitants and 3024 acres: in the deanery of Tiverton, archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter, hundred of Bampton, North Devonshire; 6 miles west from Wellington, and 8½ north-east from Tiverton. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. Wm.Wills, M.A. had the tithes commuted at £300 per annum, with residence and 1½ acre of glebe, and is in the patronage of William Carew Rayer, Esq. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to All Saints, consisting of nave, chancel, transept, north, south and centre aisles, and tower containing five bells. There is a school for children of both sexes and the parish is privileged to send one boy to the Grammar School at Uffculme. At Doomsday Survey this manor was held under Baldwin the Sheriff by Rogo or Rogus, hence its name. It had a market and fair granted in 1343, which have long been obsolete. William Carew Rayer.
