Polwhele's History of Devonshire (1793, p. 470), recounts an accident that occurred on the cliffs between Bideford and Clovelly, at a place traditionally called Giffard's Jump. One of the Giffard family (a young man), sitting on the cliff edge fell backwards to the rocks 130 feet below but was unhurt. The accident is thought to have occurred in the early 1740's, and its details preserved in family memory and poetry. This simple event has been expanded and embroidered by the paper's author into a highly convoluted and somewhat repetitious account of the prolific Gifford family's complex history.
