The surname Churchill is thought to be habitational in origin, from a place name meaning 'church on the hill.' Its roots are the Old English cyrice meaning 'church' and hyll meaning 'hill.' Churchill is a westcountry name, with early sightings as a place-name in Somerset and Devon. Chope's Note provides evidence of early Devonshire Churchill ancestry that differs significantly from that found in the published pedigrees of his day.
