A walk through some of the Western counties of England

Richard Warner
Bath: R. Crutwell. Sold by GG & J Robinson, London: Paternoster Row. illus., maps, 226 pp.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The book is an entertaining account of its author's rambles through Somerset, into Devon and on to Cornwall. Rev. Richard Warner (1763 - 1853) was a clergyman and writer of a considerable number of topographical books based on his walks and his interest in antiquarianism. He was minister at All Saints in Bath in 1794, from then on publishing books for both interest and profit. Based in Bath he was able to investigate the many local antiquities as well as via his lengthy walks through the Westcountry, and published many articles as well as two books on that city. He was at St James church, Bath until 1817. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy held in the Bavarian State Library, Munich, collection that can be downloaded from https://books.google.co.uk/books, with a search by either author or title. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers. The index focuses primarily on Devonshire and the surname list is presented in sections.
