The Fairest County of England
The Century Magazine, vol. 27(2), (1883, December), illus. pp. 163-174.
by
Francis George Heath
Prepared by Michael Steer
The article is a beautifully illustrated, romantic, eulogy for England's fairest county that appeared in the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine for December 1883. The Century Magazine was first published in the United States in 1881 by The Century Company of New York City. It was the successor of Scribner's Monthly Magazine and ceased publication in 1930. The tone and content of The Century changed over its long history. It began as an Evangelical Christian publication, but over time began to speak to a more general educated audience as it developed into the largest periodical in the country. Illustrations in the article include a village near Exeter, a view near Farmington, on the Dart at Dittisham, a Devonshire Lane, Berry Pomeroy, a bridge on Dartmoor, the mouth of the Dart, Antsey's cove near Torquay, and a view of Clovelly from the pier. The magazine was a gift to the Library by Mrs Ezra Abbot of Cambridge (Mass.) in June 1885.This rare and much sought-after magazine was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the Harvard University Library collection and can be downloaded from HathiTrust. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries.
