Vicars of Cullompton since the Commonwealth
Trans. Devon. Assoc. 42, (1910). illus. pp.206-214.
by
Rev Thomas Cann Hughes, MA, FSA
Prepared by Michael Steer
In 1536 St Nicholas Priory was dissolved and the last Prior gained appointment as the Vicar of Cullompton. Patronage then passed to the More family of Moorehays. The first Nonconformist congregation in Cullompton began in 1662 when the vicar of Cullompton, Rev William Crompton, was ejected from the established church. He continued to preach and a Protestant Dissenters meeting house was built in 1698 which became the Unitarian Chapel. This paper is a mine of information on the incumbents from Cromwell's days to the Victorian era. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
