The Works of Augustus Toplady, B.A., Late Vicar of Broadhembury, Devon. (London: J. Chidley, 1837, 915pp.)
by
Robert Dymond
Prepared by Michael Steer
Augustus Montague Toplady (4 November 1740–11 August 1778) was an Anglican cleric and celebrated hymnographer. He is remembered as a major Calvinist opponent of John Wesley and as author of the hymn "Rock of Ages". This introductory section to vicar Toplady’s weighty theological tome is a cornucopia of parishioner names as well as those of influential theologians of the day, extracted mainly from his diary. The book was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the Princeton University Theological Seminary Library collection and can be downloaded from HathiTrust. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
