Shortly after 1550 St. Anne's became the town's Grammar School, a role it probably took over from St. Nicholas Chapel, another former chantry chapel in the town. It offered a classical education, for boys only, with an emphasis on Latin. During the 16th and 17th centuries St. Anne's had around 30 pupils. In 1659 it was joined by Alice Horwood's School for 'twenty poor maids', a stone's throw away in Church Lane, and in 1710 by the Bluecoat Boy's Charity School in All Hallows Chapel over the North Gate with 50 pupils. This was the extent of formal schooling in the town until the 19th century.Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries.
