Notes on the musical history of Barnstaple
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. 49, (1917) pp. 283-295.
by
Henry J. Edwards
Prepared by Michael Steer
The author, who was credentialed DMus (Oxon), was organist and choirmaster at the parish church. The history of music in the town has monastic roots and much of the article's focus is on Barnstaple's early church music. The earliest records suggest that festivals developing in celebration of Barnstaple's annual fair as far back as 1435, when merchants brought with them Minstrels to amuse onlookers. As a thriving trading port, Barnstaple attracted a broad range of multi-cultural traders developing the town's reputation for festival events. The Victorian and Edwardian eras saw the advent of the Easter Musical Festival Society. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
