The volumes are only selections from the records and references are often made to many other documents not transcribed at all in the Reprint, or to many hundreds of names (sometimes) in documents not completely transcribed in the Reprint. By and large, it seems that the older the record the more complete the transcription is likely to be. The authors make continual reference to the deterioration in the records so this made obvious sense to them. When records are shortened in transcription, as they often are, then the names at the top are more likely to get transcribed. This does tend to make a bias towards the wealthier citizens names appearing in the Reprint as their names are invariably at the top of any list.
Spellings of names have been retained in the precise form given in the text including Latin and Norman French versions of the same name, as separate names. All names are subject to considerable variation over the centuries (sometimes even in the same document) and care should be taken to ensure that all possible variations of spelling and pronunciation are sought. First names only have not usually been indexed.
Names given merely as reference points are not indexed (e.g. 'The Guild of St. George' or 'in the time of Edward III'). Likewise, names of historians/antiquarians referred to in the text, are ignored.
This is an index to names of people only. Please note the following caution from one of the authors:
"In commencing the selections and extracts from the volumes which have been bound up. . contractions will not be followed except in some special cases-or occasionally as illustrating the style of the period."
"I have copied the foregoing lists [pp. 21-24] as given by Mr. Chanter . . . . but I am of the opinion that many of the names were incorrectly copied from the original MS., and that if we could refer to this an amended orthography would throw much light on the signification of the words. In some cases there are contemporary documents which give many of the names in a different form, and one that can be interpreted." - Thomas Wainwright
