"MUGGINTON, a parish in the hundreds of Appletree and Morleston, county Derby, 7 miles N.W. of Derby, its post town, and 4 W. of the Duffield railway station. The village, which is small, is situated on a branch of the river Derwent, and is wholly agricultural. The parish is of large extent, containing the townships of Weston-under-Wood, Mercaston, and Ravensdale Park. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lichfield, value £365.The church, dedicated to All Saints, is an ancient edifice, with a square embattled and pinnacled tower containing four bells. The chancel has a monument to Sir R. Kniveton bearing date 1400. The parochial charities produce about £69 10s. per annum, of which £64 go to Pole's school, and the remainder distributed in flannel to the poor. There is a girls' school supported by subscription. Lord Scarsdale is lord of the manor of Ravensdale Park, and Thomas Hallowes, Esq., of the manor of Mugginton."
