It was founded in 1825.

Church History
Built in 1825 as a chapel to Stockport: St. Mary the Virgin. In 1839 it became the district church for the townships of Bramhall and Stockport Etchells, and part of the township of Stockport (previously served by Stockport: St. Mary the Virgin).
The district was affected by the following boundary changes:
- 1844 June 3 — reduced when part of the township of Stockport was transferred to Stockport: St. Matthew.
- 1878 August 23 — reduced when part of the townhship of Bramhall was transferred to Norbury: St. Thomas.
- 1882 June 30 — reduced when the township of Stockport Etchells was transferred to Gatley: St. James the Apostle.
- 1897 August 6 — reduced when parts of the townships of Stockport and Bramhall were transferred to Stockport: St. George.
- 1911 January 24 — reduced when the remainder of the township of Bramhall was transferred to Bramhall: St. Michael & All Angels.
