"MARTON, a chapelry in the parish of PRESTBURY, hundred of MACCLESFIELD, county palatine of CHESTER, 3½ miles (N. by W.) from Congleton, containing 341 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Chester, endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £400 royal bounty. D. Davenport, Esq. was patron in 1806. The chapel is a rude building of wood, with a chancel and spire of more modern date; it had formerly a chantry, which is said to have been founded in the reign of Edward III., by Sir J.
