It was founded in 1598.
Church History
An ancient parish church, originally serving the townships of Childer Thornton, Eastham, Great Sutton, Hooton, Little Sutton, Netherpool, Overpool, and part of the township of Whitby.
The district was affected by the following boundary changes:
- 1862 June 10 — reduced when the townships of Childer Thornton, Hooton, and Little Sutton, were transferred to Hooton: St. Paul.
- 1871 March 28 — reduced when the townships of Netherpool and Overpool, and the constituent part of the township of Whitby, were transferred to Ellesmere Port: Christ Church.
- 1880 March 5 — reduced when the township of Great Sutton was transferred to Great Sutton: St. John the Evangelist.
- 1968 June 7 — alteration to the boundary with Bromborough: St. Barnabas (details not available).
