It was founded in 1859. It closed in 1971.

Church History
On 9 June 1859 it became a district church for part of the township of Birkenhead (previously served from Birkenhead: St. Mary)..
The district was affected by the following boundary changes:
- 1876 October 31 — reduced when part of the township of Birkenhead was transferred to the new district of Claughton: Christ Church.
- 1881 July 22 — reduced when the following part of the township of Birkenhead was transferred to Birkenhead: St. Paul: "All that contiguous portion of the particular district of Saint John Birkenhead aforesaid which is bounded on the west and on the south by the hereinbefore described portion of the new parish of Saint Catherine Tranmere aforesaid, on the east by the new parish of Saint Paul Birkenhead aforesaid, and on the remaining side that is to say on the north by an imaginary line commencing upon the boundary which divides the last-named new parish from the particular district of Saint John Birkenhead aforesaid at the point where Wilbraham-street joins Borough-road and .extending thence westward along the middle of the last-named road for a distance of five and a half chains or thereabouts to the boundary at or near to the north-eastern end of Rodney-street which boundary divides the said particular district of Saint John Birkenhead from the new parish of Saint Catherine Tranmere aforesaid."
- 1905 May 12 — extended to include following area transferred from Bidston: St. Oswald: "All that portion of the said parish of Bidston which is bounded upon the east by the said new parish of Saint John, Birkenhead, upon the southwest by the said new parish of Christ Church, Claughton-cum-Grange, and upon the remaining side, that is to say, upon the north, by an imaginary line commencing upon the boundary which divides the said new parish of Christ Church, Claughton-cum-Grange, from. the said parish of Bidston at the junction of Slatey-road with Park-road South, and extending thence eastward along the middle of Park-road South for a distance of six chains or thereabouts to the point where the boundaries which divide the said parish of Bidston, the said new parish of Saint Anne, Birkenhead, and the said new parish of Saint John, Birkenhead, all meet."
- 1922 February 14 — reduced when part of the district was transferred to Birkenhead: St. Mark.
The church closed in 1974, and its area became part of a unified Birkenhead district based at Birkenhead: St. Anne.
