- Higher Whitley (or Whitley Superior) was a township in Great Budworth ancient parish, Bucklow hundred (SJ 6280), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- In 1936 the civil parish was abolished to become part of Whitley.
- It included the hamlets of Grimsditch, Higher Whitley and Norcott Brook
- The population was 283 in 1801, 322 in 1851, and 323 in 1901.
