- Wharton was a township in Davenham ancient parish, Northwich hundred (SJ 6666), which became a civil parish in 1866.

The civil parish was abolished in 1936 to become parts of Winsford and Bostock.
- It includes the hamlets of Donefields, Gravel Hill, Rilshaw and Winsford.
- The population was 753 in 1801, 1775 in 1851, and 3319 in 1901.
