"UPTON, or OVER-CHURCH, a parish in the, lower division of the hundred of WIRRALL, county palatine of CHESTER, 7¾ miles (N. by W.) from Great. Neston, containing 183 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Chester, endowed with £600 royal bounty, and £200. parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of J. Feilden, Esq. At Upton (from which, the parish church, called Over-Church, is distant half a mile) a market was held so late as 1662; there are still two fairs for cattle. - Upton by Birkenhead, a township and ancient parish in Wirral hundred (SJ 2688), became a civil parish in 1866.
- The civil parish was abolished in 1933 to become parts of Birkenhead and Wallasey.
- Included the hamlet of Overchurch.
- The population was 141 in 1801, 227 in 1851, and 788 in 1901.

"UPTON, (or Overchurch), a parish and township in the lower division of Wirrall hundred, county Chester, 4 miles S.W. of Birkenhead, its post town, and 8 N.W. of Great Neston. The village was once a market town, and had two annual fairs for cattle. The living is a perpetual curacy* in the diocese of Chester, value £60. The church is designated Overchurch. There is a National school for both sexes, at which a Sunday-school is held. There is also a free lending library, supported by William Inman, Esq., of Upton Hall, who is lord of the manor. A court leet and baron is held annually.
