Church Records

Built in 1858 as the district church for part of the township of Tranmere (previously served by Tranmere: St. Catherine). The boundaries of "The District Chapelry of Saint Paul, Tranmere" were described in the London Gazette on 27 April 1858:

"All that part of the township and chapelry district of Tranmere, in the parish of Bebington, in the county and diocese of Chester, which is situate to the south of an imaginary line extending from the western boundary of such township along the middle of a lane, called Prenton-lane, in an easternly direction, and also along the middle of Well-lane, as far as a point opposite to the middle of the southern end of the fence which divides the close, numbered 406 on the Tithe Commutation Map of the parish of Bebington, and on the map hereunto annexed, from the close numbered 407 on the same maps, and extending thence northward and eastward along the middle of such fence, and alternately eastward and northward along the middle of the.fences dividing the closes, numbered respectively 436 and 441, on the said maps, from the closes, numbered respectively 407, 437, 440, and 442, on the same maps, to the middle of the road leading from the church of the district of Saint Paul aforesaid, to Tranmere Ferry, and extending thence northward along the middle of such last-mentioned road to a point opposite to the western end of the fence dividing the close, numbered 214 on the said maps, from the close numbered 326 on such maps, and extending thence eastward along the middle of such last-mentioned fence to the middle of the Birkenhead, Lancashire, and Cheshire Junction Railway, and extending thence southward along the middle of such railway as far as a point marked A on the said map hereunto annexed, in the centre of the bridge which carries such railway over a road or lane running between certain premises, known as Birkenhead-buildings, and certain other premises, known as Liverpool-buildings, and extending thence along the middle of the last-mentioned lane, and across the road leading from Rock Ferry to Tranmere Ferry aforesaid, and along the middle of the fence dividing the close, numbered 259 on the said maps, from the close, numbered 263 thereon, to the River Mersey"

The district was affected by the following boundary changes:

• 1883 March 6 — reduced when part of the township of Tranmere was transferred to Lower Tranmere: St. Luke.
• 1900 August 10 — reduced when the following area was transferred to Rock Ferry: St. Peter: "All that contiguous portion of the new parish of Saint Paul Tranmere in the said county and diocese which is bounded upon the south-east by the said new parish of Saint Peter Rock Ferry upon the north-east by the hereinafter described portion of the parish of Bebington in the county and diocese aforesaid or in other words by the River Mersey, upon the north by the new parish of Saint Luke Lower Tranmere in the county and diocese aforesaid and upon the remaining side, that is to say, upon the south-west by an imaginary line commencing upon the boundary which divides the said new parish of Saint Luke, Lower Tranmere from the new parish of Saint Paul, Tranmere aforesaid, at the centre of the bridge which carries the line of the Birkenhead Railway over Union-street, and extending thence south-eastward along the middle of the said line of railway for a distance of fifty-three chains or thereabouts to the boundary which divides the said new parish of Saint Paul Tranmere from the new parish of Saint Peter, Rock Ferry aforesaid."
• 1902 March 7 — reduced when part of the township of Tranmere was transferred to Prenton: St. Stephen.
• 1971 April 30 — enlarged by the addition of the area of the former district of Lower Tranmere: St. Luke. The amalgamated district was renamed "Saint Paul with Saint Luke, Tranmere".
