"SMALLWOOD, a township in that part of the parish of ASTBURY which is in the hundred of NORTHWICH, county palatine of CHESTER, 3 miles (E. by S.) from Sandbach, containing 584 inhabitants. - Smallwood was a township in Astbury ancient parish, Northwich hundred (SJ 8060), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- It includes the hamlets of Brookhouse Green, Four Lane Ends (part), Martin's Moss, Mirian Heath, Mossend, Moss Mere, Overton Green, Pool Lane End, Rue Moss, Simms Green, Spen Green, Spen Moss and Wallhill.
- The population was 492 in 1801, 619 in 1851, 530 in 1901, 585 in 1951, and 491 in 2001.
