"ROWTON, a township in the parish of CHRISTLETON, lower division of the hundred of BROXTON, county palatine of CHESTER, 3¼ miles (E. S. E.) from Chester, containing 108 inhabitants. The Chester canal passes by this township. Here was fought the battle which terminated so fatally for the cause of Charles I.; and on Rowton Heath the Cheshire gentry assembled, and declared for a free parliament, on the attempt of Sir George Booth to restore Charles II., in 1659."
