"PRESTON-on-the-HILL, a township in the parish of RUNCORN, hundred of BUCKLOW, county palatine of CHESTER, 4 miles (N. E. by E.) from Frodsham, containing 391 inhabitants. The Grand Trunk canal passes through the township, and forms a junction with the Duke of Bridgewater's canal, along both which the transmission of goods is very considerable. - Preston on the Hill was a township in Daresbury chapelry and Runcorn ancient parish, Bucklow hundred (SJ 5780), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- The civil parish was abolished in 1936 to become part of Preston Brook.
- It included the hamlets of Barkers Hollow, Cottons Bridge, Preston Brook, Red Brow, and Tunnel Top (part).
- The population was 333 in 1801, 594 in 1851, and 454 in 1901.
