- Newton was a township in Prestbury ancient parish, Macclesfield hundred (SJ 8880), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- The civil parish was abolished in 1936 to become part of Mottram St. Andrew.
- The population was 108 in 1811, 122 in 1851, and 88 in 1901.
