- Matley was a township in Mottram-in-Longdendale ancient parish, Macclesfield hundred (SJ 9796), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- The civil parish was abolished in 1936 to become parts of Stalybridge, Dukinfield, Hyde and Longdendale.
- The population was 285 in 1801, 252 in 1851, and 196 in 1901.
