"STANNEY (GREAT), a township in the parish of STOKE, higher division of the hundred of WIRRAL, county palatine of CHESTER, 6¾ miles (N.) from Chester, containing 18 inhabitants. The Chester canal passes through this township, A court leet is occasionally held. Excellent marl, composed of alluvial matter, abounds here, and large trees have been dug up in the meadows." - Great Stanney was a township in Stoak ancient parish, Wirral hundred (SJ 4173), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- The civil parish was abolished in 1950 to become part of Ellesmere Port.
- It included the hamlets of Stanney Grange and Wolverham.
- The population of Great Stanney was 12 in 1801, 56 in 1851, and 58 in 1901.
