- Bredbury was a township in Stockport ancient parish, Macclesfield hundred (SJ 9291), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- The civil parish was abolished in 1936 to become parts of Bredbury & Romiley and Marple.
- It includes the hamlets of Butterhouse Green, Castle Hall, Hatherlow and Woodley.
- The population was 1358 in 1801, 2991 in 1851, 4691 in 1901, and 7154 in 1931.
