"BIRTLES, a township in the parish of PRESTBURY hundred of MACCLESFIELD, county palatine of CHESTER, 2¾ miles (W. by N.) from Macclesfield, containing 47 inhabitants. There are various tumuli in the neighbourhood, and fragments of urns, which formerly contained burnt bones, have been discovered." - Birtles was a township in Prestbury ancient parish, Macclesfield hundred (SJ 8574), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- The civil parish was abolished in 1936 to become parts of Henbury and Over Alderley.
- The population was 35 in 1801, 65 in 1851, and 51 in 1901.
