"THEALE, a parish in the hundred of Reading, county Berks, 5 miles S.W. of Reading, its post town, and 12 from Newbury. It is a station on the Great Western railway. It is situated on the river Kennet. Until recently, it was a chapelry in the parish of Tilehurst, but was separated from it by Act of Parliament. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Oxford, in the patronage of Magdalen College, Oxford. The church was erected in 1830 by Mrs. Sophia Sheppard. There is a National school with a small endowment."
