Hide
A church of simple form and elevational expression situated dramatically at a road turning on raised ground, typical of the tower-and-hall design favoured by the Board of First Fruits in the early nineteenth century. It retains much of its historic character and charm intact. The rich detailing of the interior furniture and windows are excellently executed and add artistic interest to the building. The transept is a later addition by Welland & Gillespie. The graveyard and glebe house, sited in close proximity, add to its setting and context.

In 1868, the parish of Killinkere contained the following places:
"KILLINKERE, (or Killencare), a parish in the baronies of Castlerahan and Upper Loughtee, county Cavan, province of Ulster, Ireland, 3 miles N.E. of Ballyjamesduff. Virginia is its post town. It is 7 miles long by 4 broad. The surface consists for the most part of good arable soil. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Kilmore, value £707, in the patronage of the bishop. The church was erected at the expense of the late Board of First Fruits in 1817. Here are two (united) Roman Catholic chapels and two Presbyterian meeting-houses. One Sunday and several day schools are within the parish. Slate occurs here.
