Drumlane is an ancient monastic site, standing prominently on the southern spur of a ridge among the lakes which form the north-westerly outliers of Lough Oughter. The position is fairly sheltered, the view restricted. The place is accessible by land only from the north and north west, and is connected with Milltown by an old lane. The abbey is believed to have been founded in the 6th century, and was later taken by the Augustinian Canons from Kells.
